Lightweight Rebuild
After
may days if not weeks of scraping of underseal and cutting out of rust i decided
that maybe it was better to replace the rotting chassis with a more solid
version but not wanting to fork out for a new chassis which although are good
value from my local supplier Paddocks of Matlock i turned my attention to EBAY
A number of suitable chassis were found but soon went out of my price range it was after some discussion with my younger son Will that i thought if we are going to replace the chassis why not go the whole hog and fit a shortened Range Rover Chassis that way we could build the ultimate Hybrid V8 land rover , lets face it everyone loves a V8 Landie
So
our attention turned to finding a range rover chassis or complete but MOT
failure range rover anyway after a few near misses i found a shortened range
rover chassis located close by so my bid was set and a few days later we had
one, we hooked up the car transporters and set off to collect it
The chassis was in sound condition at first glance and was in a rolling state but the differentials had been removed, we rolled it off the trailer once home and pushed it into the workshop many many hours were then spent scraping off many years thick black grease followed up by me and both the lads setting about it with hand grinders and flap wheels
eventually
we had to strip down to just the chassis to grind the underside a small portable
shot blasting pot was bought to get to the areas we couldn't get into with the
grinders and i wish we had bought one years ago it is simply superb although we
need a nice dry day as we blasted outside as the blasting media get all over
All areas were rust treated with the Frost's anti rust treatment and really stubborn areas were treated with Granvilles rust treatment as supplied to the MOD , this will be an excellent test bed for both these 2 products, the area where the chassis was shortened was examined and as seems to always be the way the repair is not of good standard and will rust badly as plates have been welded over rusty chassis and so i am currently grinding off the overlap plates to do the job properly
